Intense documentary about wrestling legend Dan Gable. Dan was a powerhouse wrestler who later transitioned into coaching.Gable competed nationally in freestyle from 1967 to 1976, winning 3 national championships. Gable competed in international freestyle from 1971 to 1973 and famously won the 1971 world championship at 68 KG in Sofia, Bulgaria. The following year, he followed up his world championship by winning the gold medal at Lightweight in the 1972 Munich Olympics while not giving up a single point during the duration of the games. Gable concluded his international career in 1973 and began to focus primarily on coaching.
Gable took over as head coach for the University of Iowa in 1976-1977 after acting as assistant coach there since 1972. Gable quickly turned the Hawkeyes into a national wrestling dynasty, leading them to an NCAA championship in 1978 and then remaining champions until 1986. He coached Iowa to their next 3 NCAA championship from 1991 to 1993. He then finished his head coach career with a stretch of NCAA championships from 1995 to 1997, bringing his total to 15 NCAA team championships (on top of 21 Big Ten team championships). During his time as coach of Iowa, Gable coached 45 individual national champions, 106 Big Ten champions, and 152 All-Americans. In addition to his collegiate coaching career, he also coached the U.S. Olympic Team in 1980, 1984, and 2000. In 2006, Gable returned to Iowa as an assistant coach under Tom Brands (that felt weird to write) until 2011.
