Being able to grip fight effectively is important for gi and no gi. The actual techniques used changes, but the idea remains the same. Control the grips and you control the position.

I always put it this way. In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. If you control the grips and are able to get the grips you need for your techniques. Then you can execute the techniques you been taught.

However, if you are unable to dominate grips and positioning. You’ll always be hard pressed to secure the techniques you plan to use.

I mean if you can get the grips on your partners arm, it’s unlikely you’ll get an armbar, right?

This is a short clip from a no gi BJJ class we did recently where we covered upper body grip fighting and securing the single leg takedown.

We showed a finished, which isn’t included in the video. But if you are able to secure the leg and grab it reliably. The finishes will be easier to make happen.

As I’ve said in other videos relating to BJJ techniques. It’s important to drill entries and setups before the actual sweeps, submissions or finishes.

In this case. The Russian 2 on 1 is a setup / entry into the single leg position. It’s also a very effective way to combat someone’s collar grip on the feet.

The collar grip can be frustrating to deal with. Especially if the person is able to snake their arm around tight. The Russian 2 on 1 is a perfect counter to the collar grip and is a great setup for the single leg takedown.

And you can use this wrestling based move very effectively in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
