During a few of my matches this year I’ve been able to hit a back take form side control when the person starts to defend. In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Oftentimes when someone threatens with the pass the back mount is open. In this series I show 3 BJJ drills that you can use to setup the same back take.

I’ve broken the movement down to make it easier to follow.

It starts with the step over. I’ve also heard this movement called the long step before. This Brazilian Jiujitsu movement is executed as the person gets to their side in order to escape or defend side control. In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu the person on the bottom has to get to their side to be effective with their escapes. It’s very difficult to do most escapes in BJJ from felt on your back.

The second BJJ drill in this video is a simple back take drill. The point of this drill is to get used to moving our hips and body into position in order to take the back. The idea is that you want to be sliding your leg into place getting their first back mount hook as the person is trying to turtle.

The last BJJ drill in the video is simply a combination of the 2. You will execute the step over and have your partner begin to turn away so that they don’t give up position and then slide the hook in to take back mount.

This is an incredibly simple Brazilian Jiu-jitsu drill. As most of my techniques and drills are. But the beauty is in the simplicity. If you get these movements drilled to the point where they are automatic. It’s amazing at how effective they can be.

I hope these BJJ drills are helpful to you!
